Social Media and Broadcast Journalism

A new study done by Ypulse, an authority on Millennials and youth culture, found that 21% of people ages 14-30 site social media like Facebook and Twitter as their primary source for news and 68% site it as an overall news source. They are already interacting with those sites and like the immediacy of the information. However, the majority is not confident in the accuracy of the news they receive and 67% would rather be the last to know if accuracy was certain. And it’s not just Millennials – according to the Pew Research center the number of social media users age 65+ has roughly tripled in the last four years!

For broadcasters, social media is a great platform to quickly disseminate information, advance marketing goals and to open a dialogue with viewers. Facebook, Twitter and other social media sites are not meant to replace traditional broadcasting but serve to compliment your website and on-air broadcasts.
