Ideas for Elementary Teachers
At Valley Park Elementary, Overland Park, Kansas, second grade students spent a month in the spring studying weather. Each student picked a letter of the alphabet and had to come up with a word that correlated with weather. They then drew pictures to match their word and the outcome was very creative and imaginative.
They also split into three weather teams. Each team's assignment was to watch the weather segments on TV and report back the next day with the weather forecast. Each team watched a different television station. The results were recorded, charted, and graphed. They used their weather instruments in the classroom to record their official weather data and again charted and graphed it. At the end of the month, they could see which television station had the highest percentage of correct forecasts. They not only learned about weather but received an additional math lesson.
